  I’m not sure about this particular asteroid but we do know material from space is constantly hitting the Earth. Most of this is relatively small (like a grain of sand) though as it passes through the atmosphere it heats up and glows – we see this material as meteors or shooting stars.
  
  Occasionally the Earth gets hit by bigger chunks of material, some of which survives to the ground and can be collected (meteorites). Even more occasionally an object can hit something man made or cause other damage.
